Women's Month is a time to celebrate the roles women play in their families, careers and communities. It's also a valuable reminder of something that doesn't always receive enough attention: understanding your own financial and estate affairs.

Estate planning isn't only something to think about later in life. Knowing what you have, where important documents are kept and what will happen to your assets can make a significant difference to the people you leave behind.

Know What Forms Part of Your Estate

Property, vehicles, investments, bank accounts and other assets may all form part of your estate. Having a clear understanding of what you own — as well as any debts or financial obligations — is an important starting point.

Make Sure Your Will Is Up to Date

Life changes. Marriage, divorce, children, property purchases and other major events can affect what you want to happen to your estate. Having a valid will is important, but so is reviewing it periodically to ensure it still reflects your wishes and circumstances.

Keep Important Information Organised

Would your loved ones know where to find your will, important financial information or relevant documentation if they needed it?

Keeping these records organised and accessible can make an already difficult time easier for your family and those responsible for administering your estate.

Don't Leave It for “One Day”

Estate planning can be easy to postpone, particularly when life is busy. But understanding your affairs and putting the necessary arrangements in place is ultimately about protecting the people and things that matter to you.

This Women's Month, take some time to ask yourself: If someone had to deal with my estate tomorrow, would they know where to begin?

At V&V Boedels, we understand the importance of handling estate matters with care, professionalism and respect.
